People have asked for years: What is so special about the Fake Rock?  Why do people talk about it so much?  What is under it?

Well, now you can find out for yourself.  Pop some popcorn, sit back, and follow along as a lovable everyday family that just needs to get out of the house find themselves inexplicably thrown into the thick of an arduous pilgrimage to this Historical Monument of Infinite Renown.  See for yourself the rock many call the Chartres of West Cambridge.

Well it’s Pi Day (3.14) and in honor of that we created the podcast below, which is rather long.  In this early morning creation we discuss a pending visit from Tien and Kien, Isaac’s new friend Oakes, Leah’s new friend, a balloon, and that’s about it.

Just happened by the Fake Rock today and took a quick pick with the mobile phone for the elucidation of all.  Enjoy!

Interesting photo montage from March 7, 2009, also known as the Day of the Fake Rock.  While we have no pictures of the Fake Rock part of the day, we do have these: Leah and Isaac on the way to the Fake Rock (before the camera battery gives out) and Isaac at work.  At work?  As he says, “My job is to put shine on everything.”  We capture him in the process.

Some key photos to look for:

  1. Shining in the sewer
  2. “I raise my light to Heaven!”
  3. Rock in the Shoe
  4. Colored lights in Tree
  5. Hey, this is a big tire
  6. Snow pile is in the wrong place
On our way to look under the Fake Rock

On our way to look under the Fake Rock

Hi all,

We made an excursion this, the warmest morning of the calendar year, to the famous “Fake Rock” of Mt. Auburn, Cambridge, MA.  In particular to see what was under it.  We apologize that we have no photos or videos, as all our cameras had depleted batteries.  But we did look under, and we saw some pipes and a spigot.  Leah and Isaac try to describe the experience in the very short video below.  But really how can you put this kind of event into words?

For the record, post-rock itinerary also include:

  1. Ate some fruit at the Mt. Auburn Hospital Cafeteria, adjacent to Fake Rock.
  2. Rode the 73 Bus past the Fake Rock to Belmont Kidspace, where we discovered we would be helping open up.
  3. Played with Isaac’s new friend Ethan.
  4. Walked to Cushing Square, Belmont, ate a doughnut in a bakery and lunch at Restaurant on Common.
  5. Rode the 73 Bus back to the Fake Rock, looked under it again, and went home.
  6. Planted acorns in a flower pot of dirt.

  • Isaac: Are there bad men under the fake rock?
  • Isaac: Fake things and toys are not heavy.
  • Leah: Some heavy things fall down.
  • Isaac: I waked up fast and you (Leah) waked up slow.
  • Isaac: I wasn’t creakin’, I was just peekin’.
  • Leah: Who’s gonna be the bad guy if we’re both good?
  • Leah: She looks like me because she has . . .
  • Isaac: The same face as you?
  • Leah: Because we’re both girls.
  • Isaac: Those are fashion boots for girls.
  • Isaac: Let’s laugh about it, clap about it, and jump about it on the bed.
  • Leah: My big girl dreamed about clowns.  And I dreamed about pillows.
  • Isaac: I dreamed about trucks and busses.  And vans.  Pickup Trucks.
  • Isaac: My job is to put shine on everything.
